We’re honoured to share that The Elm Project has recently been featured in Knysna News, recognizing the meaningful work we’ve been doing across the Tsitsikamma region. This spotlight is not just a moment of pride for our team—it’s a testament to the growing impact of compassionate outreach in under-resourced communities.
Since February this year, over 100 dogs have been brought to Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) for sterilisation through our programme—an essential part of our ongoing mission to reduce suffering and promote responsible pet ownership.
From Grassroots to Growth
Founded just over a year ago by Tsitsikamma locals Jenny van Niekerk and Bianca Steyl, The Elm Project began with a simple yet powerful aim: to help communities in need sterilise their pets and reduce the number of unwanted animals.
“We were heartbroken by the number of neglected and unwanted pets we saw daily,” says Van Niekerk. “That was our motivation—to create change, one animal at a time.”
What started as a small effort has grown into a multi-faceted outreach initiative offering:
- Spaying and neutering of pets
- Rabies vaccinations and deworming
- Basic veterinary care
- Food, blankets, and kennels for pets in impoverished households
- Education about animal welfare—especially for children
- Care for donkeys and horses, including dipping for parasites
Collaboration That Changes Lives
One of our most important partnerships has been with Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS), whose support has made it possible to sterilise more animals than ever before. Through this collaboration, 113 dogs have been sterilised since February—a milestone we couldn’t have imagined without access to dedicated veterinary services.
KAWS has not only assisted with sterilisation but has also treated parvovirus cases in our rescued puppies and provided vital guidance as we grow as an organisation. Their encouragement and expertise have been invaluable.
On the Ground, Every Day
Our outreach currently spans Clarkson, Woodlands, and Guava Juice, with services extending to both domestic animals and working animals like donkeys and horses. From managing skin infections and fly strike to treating sunburn and injuries, our team—alongside dedicated volunteers—is committed to improving the lives of animals across the region.
We’ve also hired two local community members to assist in caring for surrendered animals, creating employment while ensuring consistent care.
Emergency Care & Ongoing Needs
Thanks to the generous donations we’ve received, we’ve been able to respond to emergency cases: animals hit by cars, poisoned, trapped in snares, or suffering from embedded collars. These are often situations where immediate veterinary attention is the difference between life and death.
Despite these efforts, we remain a young organisation with limited donors. Every contribution helps us reach more animals and provide essential care.
Looking Ahead
Our dream? To one day have our own veterinary clinic and shelter—where animals can be sterilised, rehabilitated, and rehomed in a space of safety and compassion.
As featured in Knysna News, we continue to work toward a future where every pet in our community is cared for, valued, and loved.
